Week 2 Syllabus, 10/26/15
WE WILL FINISH THE AWAKENING NEXT week. Before we do, we will also finish the reader's study guide questions. We will also examine another documentary, this one on the painting of Mary Cassatt, who would have been a contemporary artist to Edna Pontillier. Further, there are a number of essays, chapter selections, and poems on gender equality in America that we will also dwell upon.
Monday
- After collecting the study guides for chapters 11-15, I will model annotations for chapter 23, students working on their own annotations as we listen to chapter 23 together. Subsequently, students will listen to and annotate chapter 24 in class.
- HW: Revisit your annotations so far, up through and including chapter 24 in Chopin's The Awakening.
Tuesday
- Small group work on chapter 25, listening to it together, then starting a discussion on what Edna's dreams are and why they are vanishing. We'll use that question to spark a conversation about your annotations in chapter 25. Finally, students should look for the last reader's questions in your email accounts, as we will start a conversation on the answers to those questions, beginning with chapter 15.
- HW: For the second time, I want you to revisit your annotations. Each chapter should be annotated. While more isn't necessarily more, I do expect that you a) circle language, b) write questions, and c) make connections about the theme of Edna and women's role in society.
Wednesday
- Small group work on chapters 15-20. If done, groups should start on 21-25.
- HW: Complete the study guide on chapters 15-20, due Friday.
Thursday
- No classes meet on account of parent-teacher conferences.
Friday
- Today we will start the Cassatt documentary, and students will want to take notes on the role of women in American 19th-20th century, as well as how the role of women play an important role in Cassatt's painting and life.
- HW: Complete the study guide on chapters 21-25, and read chapters 26-30. Annotate!
