Syllabus for week 7, 10/7

Monday

  • Discussion of the beginning of Thoreau's Walden, the first third of "Economy."
  • HW: Post your question about this same reading as a comment to the post just prior to this one. Remember to refer to page number(s), and include a direct quote as needed.

Tuesday

  • Reviewing the questions posted on the blog. Do clothes make the man, or does man make the clothes? What does H.D.T. mean by, ""Though they should fail immediately, they had better aim at something high"? In 9th period, we will begin reviewing the stylistic issues raised in the Color of Water responses.
  • HW: Reading the next several pages of the chapter "Economy," up to and including page 18.

Wednesday 

  • Quiz on John Muir documentary. I will pass back your notes to use while taking the quiz. We will then finish up reviewing the stylistic issues I see in your Color of Water essays. The specific issues that I mention in marginal notes are to be addressed in the next essay assignment.
  • HW: Read through and including page 25, up to the last partial paragraph. 
Thursday
  • Looking at the final non-fiction selections of the wilderness packet, Columbus' arrival in North America, as well as John Smith's arrival in North America. 

Friday

  • No class for Columbus Day weekend. 
  • HW: for Tuesday: Finish reading "Economy" over the weekend. Come to class prepared to discuss Thoreau's final points within this chapter.
