Syllabus for Week 6-Q2, 12/9

Monday

  • Review of last week's syllabus. Lecture on importance of evaluating sources. In class practice, analyzing a source on The Awakening, from a New Trier database. We will then listen to chapter one of the novel.
  • HW: Read chapters two through and including four for class tomorrow.
What is the role of women towards the end of 19th century America? How does Kate Chopin use other characters in The Awakening in order to sharply contrast Edna Pontellier’s desires with her social limitations?
— Circle words, write questions, and annotate for this question while reading Chopin's "The Awakening"

Tuesday

  • Today we will break into small groups to review a new article, this one seemingly a blog post on a web site, The Black Feminista. It is an article entitled, "Betty Friedan & The Problem With No Name," published on 9-11-13. We will also compare it with a selection from an Eric Foner article.
  • HW: Read chapters 5 through 7, inclusive, in The Awakening.

Wednesday

  • Reading and evaluating another article, this time one on Creole culture in southern Mississippi, the setting for the novel. Remember: do not dismiss an article outright because of appearances, and likewise you shouldn't accept a source as credible because it looks professional.
  • HW: Review your annotations for chapters 1 through 7 for in class discussion tomorrow.

Thursday

  • Large group discussion and individual note-taking on a series of questions related to the theme of women's independence in late 18th century America, AND questions related to the subtext of Edna's relationships in the novel.
  • Read chapters 8 through 10 for class on Friday.

Friday

  • Discussion continued. When finished, we will examine a painting by Ramon Casas, "After the Bath," 1894.
  • HW: Reading chapters 11 through 15 for class on Monday.
