Syllabus for Week 5, 9/23
Monday
- Watching selections from Herzog's excellent documentary, Grizzly Man. (9th period watched these on Friday)
- HW: Finish reading the chapter from Into the Wild.
Tuesday
- Discussion of Chris McCandless's journey into Alaska. Is this a journey you would risk? How will you shape your own character? How will you define yourself as an American?
- HW: You should finish watching the Muir documentary for homework. It is available on the Read Drive>Read Folder>English>Easton>Videos folder while you are connected to the network. Plan your time to watch the remaining hour+ during the week while here at school.
Wednesday
- Continuing with the documentary Grizzly Man.
- HW: Read the Laskin selection from "Death on the Prairies" for class on Thursday.
- Small group work on the Laskin. Should we have any remaining scenes from Grizzly Man to look at, we will do that today.
HW: Type your answers to questions 1 and 6. Also, read the Steinbeck and Gutherie selections from our wilderness packet.
Friday
- Introduction/lecture to H.D. Thoreau.
- Begin gathering notes on the following question: How do Americans use nature and/or wilderness to define themselves?
- HW for Tuesday: Read the two chapters from Richter's novel, The Trees: "A Vision" and "A Dark Country"
