Syllabus for week of October 27

LAST WEEK finished reading the play The Crucible. This week we'll finish reading supplemental articles, begin writing an essay, and also read an excellent short story by way of transitioning to our next core text, The Awakening by Kate Chopin.

Monday

  • Reading "Witchcraft" portion of the Puritan folktales in class.
  • HW: Finish reading up to "The Devil" section in our Puritan folktales packet.

Tuesday

  • Quiz on act three. Afterwords, we will return to the  up to the providence story of the shoe maker, Richard Goldsmith, who is struck down by lightening while indoors, at a Bible meeting.
  • HW: Read up through page six in Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," excluding the last paragraph. Remember to circle vocabulary in the text, write questions and observations in the right hand margins. 

Wednesday

  • Today we will continue with the short story, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow."
  • Finish reading the entire section on Satan in the folktales packet. 

Thursday

  • Finishing our reading of the Irving story. When done, we will turn our attention to our final, Crucible related reading, a selection by Sarah Vowell...remember her? This time, we will read an excellent passage from her book The Wordy Shipmates, a history of the Puritans and their impact on modern America. 
  • HW: Finish reading the Vowell, distributed in class. 

Friday

  • Happy Halloween! We will celebrate by watching a cartoon version of Irving's short story.
  • HW: Writing a claim for your next paper...due Monday, typed.
