Syllabus for week of November 10
LAST WEEK was shortened by parent/teacher conferences and the faculty's institute day. We finished the supplemental reading by Sarah Vowell, reviewed first quarter grades, and began a documentary about the impressionist American painter, Mary Cassatt. This week, we start The Awakening by Kate Chopin.
Monday
- We will finish the documentary on Mary Cassatt. Post your most important notes on Cassatt's life (relating to the women's movement) and her portrayal of women in her art. We will then begin reviewing claims for The Crucible paper.
- HW: Post your Cassatt notes. Also, revise your argument outline (contains claim, reasons, and textual evidence). Due tomorrow.
Tuesday
- Peer editing small groups. Groups will share and compare claims and troubleshoot reasons, proofing their claims for depth and significance. First book check on The Awakening.
- HW: Tonight you should write your introductions. Start with a specific attention getter
Wednesday
- Beginning background on Kate Chopin and her novella. Reading her biography and some additional reviews of the novel, it's rather heated reception.
- HW: Draft two body paragraphs for your essay tonight.
Thursday
- Students will watch a documentary on the history of New Orleans.
- HW: Draft a third body paragraph. Revise all three to date. Read articles #6 and #7.
Friday
- Vocabulary day. Starting and completing the crossword on The Awakening in class.
- HW: First draft of your paper, typed and proofread, is due on Monday. You should print it single sided, and create a heading that contains: your last name, period, date, and a title. Read article #8 for Monday as well.
