Syllabus for week of December 15

WE HAVE FINISHED reading The Awakening. Also, students should have started selecting American novels to potentially read for their research project.

Monday

  • Short reading quiz on the novella's end. Watching the Kelly McGillis production of Grand Isle.
  • HW: Finish reading the first chapter of The Problem with No Name from our supplementary readings packet. Have that read by Wednesday.

Tuesday

  • Looking at two short video clips, both featuring Kristina Hendricks, the actress who plays Joan on the A&E series Madmen. Brief review of the google spreadsheet and what we'll do with it in the library on Friday. Time permitting, we will watch a few more minutes of the film Grand Isle.
  • HW: Remember to finish the reading from "Problem with No Name" for class tomorrow. I will also collect your books tomorrow to check annotations.

Wednesday

  • Collecting books. Watching the Kelly McGillis production of Grand Isle. Picking up at the moment with Robert Lebrun leaves for Mexico.
  • HW: Reading the "Truth About Beauty" from the supplemental reading. What do you see within the article that relates to Edna Pontillier?

Thursday

  • Small group discussion and lecture.
  • HW: Reading Judith Sargent Murray's "On the Equality of the Sexes." As before...how does this article relate to Edna?

Friday

  • Meeting in the library to meet with Mr. Garneau (researching your author and reviews of your top three novels).
  • HW: Have a good break. You should go ahead and purchase a paperback copy of your novel. Please take advantage of discount book resellers--Half Price Books, Market Fresh Books--other used booksellers. You will want the copy in hand when we return from break.
