Syllabus for February 10

Monday

  • Lecture on the campus description from chapter one of Ellison's Invisible Man.
  • HW: Review the descriptions of both the car ride and the cabin, and also revisit your annotations of both. What is the extended metaphor that Ellison develops? Also, add to the new google doc what you discovered by reading the first (few) chapters in your independent novel.

Tuesday

  • Lecture on the car and cabin extended metaphors that Ellison uses in chapter two of IM.
  • HW: Read pages 71-83. "The Golden Day" is a bar and house of prostitution that the disabled, black war veterans have been escorted to for entertainment purposes. Note that the audio for the first part of the book is available on our class read folder, if you choose to use it.

Wednesday

  • Today we will finish our lecture on chapter two, covering Trueblood's dream.
  • HW: Finish reading chapter three of IM, the chapter on "The Golden Day."

Thursday

  • Lecture on chapter three, "The Golden Day," the bar and brothel that the insane veterans have been escorted to for a day of entertainment, whereat they meet the obtrusive Mr. Norton. We will also review "The Ethics of Research" and discuss our research tomorrow in the Library.
  • HW: Reading your independent novel.

Friday

  • Meeting in the Library. Today you will begin building an annotated bibliography, entering your text, two of the reviews you read on the novel, and two additional sources on the novel's historic setting and/or themes.
  • HW: Read chapter four of IM, and at least 40 pages of your novel.
