Syllabus for Week of February 24

Monday

  • Quiz on chapters 1-4. Today we will look at Rev. Barbee's sermon, and also read a short biography of Booker T. Washington, the actual founder of the Tuskegee University, and the person on which Ellison bases "The Founder." Lecture on chapter six, the IM's expulsion from the college. Here's a link to the biography we looked at in class: go here.
  • HW: Read chapter eight of Invisible Man.

Tuesday

  • Lecture on chapter seven and eight. We meet the Vet again. What does his advice reveal about the IM's identity? What does the Vet think about how the IM's conceives of himself? And then, Harlem.
  • HW: Read chapter nine of Invisible Man.

Wednesday

  • Reading quiz on chapters 6-8. Review of formatting of annotated bibliography. In third period, we will finish the clip from yesterday's documentary, and in ninth we will watch a short clip from another documentary on Ralph Ellison.
  • HW: Reading your novel independently. Remember that your annotation of the novel should supplement your approach to the research, and vise versa. Tonight, revisit the question for which you are annotating, revising as needed.

Thursday

  • Discussion of chapter nine.
  • HW: Reading your novel independently. Bring it to the library on Friday, as I will want to check your annotations at that time (returning the book to you prior to leaving the library).

Friday

  • Meeting in the Library.
  • HW: Read chapter ten of Invisible Man.
