Finding material in books?
Archaic, I know. But books can be a valuable resource.
So how do you deal with these dinosaurs of a time-long-past? First, check the title and back cover. Second, check the table of contents. Third, check in the index in the back. While Danny D. and I were looking for materials related to his contemporary novel by J. Jones, "The Thin Red Line," we found this source in the NT Winnetka Library catalog. Looking in the index, we found a bolded entry on the author's name, and even an entry on the title of his book! The page with the title on it revealed nothing useful. But checking the bolded entry, we did find the following entry on his author.
Another thing to remember: copy the title pages, and the printer's information page. This information will be valuable if entering your find in noodlebib later, or when trying to check something inside the entire book later.
