Syllabus for week of January 5

AFTER FINISHING YOUR INITIAL ANALYSIS of your top three novels, you should meet with Mr. Easton to confirm which you should purchase and begin reading. That should happen no later than this week, and that is to happen outside of class.

Monday

  • Today we will finish the last twenty minutes of the film Grand Isle. Is it true that Edna cannot "think of the children"? Is it true, as Dr. Mandolet suggests, "The trouble is that youth is given up to illusions. It seems to be a provision of Nature; a decoy to secure mothers for the race. And Nature takes no account of moral consequences, or arbitrary conditions which we create, and which we feel obliged to maintain at any cost." Is this Edna's view? Is this Chopin's view?
  • HW: Finish your research on your top three authors/books from the Friday, Dec. 19th, and come to class prepared to work on noodlebib.

Tuesday

  • Lecture on poems and the problem with no name. We will also model some small group analysis of poetry, and modeling how to read poetry.
  • HW: Read the remaining poems in the supplementary packet. This will complete all the readings in that packet.

Wednesday

  • No school on account of the ccccccc-old.
  • HW: Write your paragraph on the poem of your choice, and post it as a comment to this blog entry.

Thursday

  • Reviewing entering data on noodlebib, and bibliographic entries in general. We will also discuss the annotated bibliography, it's purpose in research and why so many students abhor keeping one (and why keeping one is essential). We will use the poems from the supplementary materials packet as models for entering information in MLA format.
  • HW: You should have met with Mr. Easton about your book choice before class tomorrow.

Friday

  • In the library to begin researching your novel, author, and criticism, and creating a working annotated bibliography.
  • HW: Purchase and begin reading your novel. You should be at least 25 pages into the novel by Monday.
