Syllabus for week of March 9, 2015
WE WILL BEGIN WRITING THE RESERACH paper this week, starting with a TQS, then developing a claim, and subsequently writing our sub-claims, categories, or topics. We will return to the library on Friday next for finishing research, and I still hope to collect drafts before Spring Break, and likely will collect--in the least--first complete drafts. In that case, we would complete a revision after break.
Monday
- Finishing out TQS conferences. While doing that, students will read Twain's "The War Prayer," chapter eight from Moby Dick, "The Pulpit." After that, we will watch selected scenes from the satirical film, M*A*S*H.
- HW: Read the short story, "Guns Before Butter" by Kurt Vonnegut.
Tuesday
- We will finish watching selected scenes from and will watch 10 minutes from a documentary about the film. It examines how the actors used improvisation to satirize America's role in the Korean War.
- HW: Read the cartoon by James Thurber, "The Last Flower."
Wednesday
- Writing a sample claim for the Vonnegut short story, and posting it to the blog. Then reading a selection from Graff & Birkenstein's They Say / I Say, about incorporating quotes in argumentative, academic writing.
- HW: Make certain that you have posted your claim on the Vonnegut story, and have read the Thurber and the Graff handouts for class on Thursday.
Thursday
- Writing a paragraph that uses both indirect and direct evidence supporting your claim about "Guns Before Butter." That paragraph should be posted as a response to your comment/claim.
- HW: Write both a claim and a paragraph about the Thurber parable, due in class on Friday. Bring 5 hard copies to class for peer revision.
Friday
- In research groups providing peer revision to the Thurber paragraphs.
- HW: A written claim for your research paper is due Monday. Have a hard copy with your name, the class name, and the date as a header in the top right corner.
