Week 4 Syllabus, 9/14/2015
WHAT ROLE DOES LITERATURE play in Americans' lives? In what way is the theater a living representation of our American consciousness? Having finished our first unit of study on Native American Indian literature, we will move into our study of drama, focusing upon Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible.
Monday
- Workshop day. We will NOT be able to meet in a computer lab to write on desktops with full keyboards. Accordingly, you will want to have a fully charged ipad and a fully functional keypad to work with. Remember, this revision should be complete by Wednesday.
- HW: No homework.
Tuesday
- Reading Miller's introductory notes to Act 1. We will also work on a crossword related to this reading, in class.
- HW: No homework.
Wednesday
- Performing three scenes from Act One of the play: Tituba, Parris, Abigail, Susanna discussing what has happened to Betty while the girls were in the woods; Mrs. Putnam, Parris discussing what has happened to the former's dead babies; Mercy, Abigail, Parris and Mr. & Mrs. Putnam attempting to quell the town's horror.
- HW: re-read and annotate the lines we've read in class. Keep a character chart that describes who they are, what their position is in Salem, and what their interests/allegiances are. Crossword will be due Monday.
Thursday
- Continuing to perform act one: Mercy, Mary Warren, Betty and Abigail's quick confab about getting their story's straight; Mary Warren, Abigail and Proctor, and then Abigail and Proctor's intimate conversation.
- HW: Just as last night, I want you to re-read what we covered in class. Read further, including Miller's description of Hale. If not already done, complete crossword.
Friday
- Reading body paragraphs that were revised and posted.
- HW: Read and annotate act two of the play.
