Week 5 Syllabus: 9/21/15

MILLER SEEMS TO COMMENT on both American morality and religious fervor. Given his complicated relationship with his ex-and future wife, Marilyn Monroe, what do we think this author is saying about the bond of marriage? Given the author's complex relationship with Elia Kazan, who testifies before HUAC in the 1950s--naming names of friends and colleagues, what do we think he's saying about loyalty and commitment to one's ideals?

Monday

  • Discussion of key points in Act 1 and 2. What happened the night of the dancing girls? What is the relationship between Parris and the Salem community?
