Week 5 Syllabus, 2/1/16
BY THE END OF THIS WEEK, YOU SHOULD have narrowed your novels down to one choice, should have purchased the book, and have a reading schedule established. The entire novel should be read by the end of the month. While reading, you should a) circle vocabulary / purposeful language choices, b) write questions, and c) examine the novel for the author's question (What question, about America, does the author seek to answer through the novel?)
MONDAY
- This is the second and final day for group discussion on the Thoreau "Civil Disobedience" questions. While discussing, I will call students up to discuss your novel choices. For those students who have not finished listing choices on the google doc...why not? If you are having technical issues, you MUST visit 224 and work past those glitches. Access to google docs is mandatory for this project.
- HW: Your typed answers to the study guide questions are due on Wednesday. Be certain to staple your group notes to them, as they will also be graded.
TUESDAY
- Identifying aphorisms that best capture your interpretation of Thoreau's essay.
- HW: If we haven't met by the end of class today, you will need to meet with me outside of class to finalize your choices. I am free periods three, four, five, seven and eight. And, of course, before and after school. The answers to the CD questions are due tomorrow.
WEDNESDAY
- In class essay on CD. Make sure you have your Ipad charged so you can access the essay. Students will write the essays, in ink, into blue books.
- HW: Narrow your novels to your top two, and be prepared to argue why your #1-2 choices would be good selections for a thematic, multi-genre research based argument.
THURSDAY
- Discussion. What, in our world today, is a cause worth your civil disobedience?
- HW: Creating a poster that illustrates your cause. 11"x 17". Due Monday.
FRIDAY
- Starting our next unit of study on "Wilderness and Nature." We will start with a documentary on our nations most famous environmentalist.
- HW: You should have obtained your novel by Monday, at the latest. You should turn in a reading calendar Monday, and the CD poster is due Monday as well.
