Week 1 Syllabus, 3/14/16
WE'RE WRITING A SHORT ESSAY ON AMERICAN PERCEPTIONS OF WILDERNESS this week, piecing together a multigenre essay that captures your take on the material we've been reading. Take a break next week, and come back refreshed and ready to finish your research paper. We'll start reading Invisible Man this week. After that we will read our last novel, The Great Gatsby.
MONDAY
- We're looking at the documentary Grizzly Man. How does Timothy Treadwell embody the American view of nature and wilderness?
- HW: None.
TUESDAY
- Finishing the documentary and beginning to review the structure of argumentative essays. Distributing grade reports.
- HW: Begin writing a claim for the wilderness paper. We will go over that in greater detail tomorrow. You should re-read four writing assignments from 3rd quarter: the Awakening/gender re-write, the in-class essay on Thoreau, the paragraph on Muir, and the out-of-class essay on Emerson.
WEDNESDAY
- Review of claims and argumentative structure.
- HW: Write and post your claim on the wilderness and nature post.
THURSDAY
- Writing out your reasons for your claim, and developing reasons that explain the veracity of your claim, as well as developing evidence from the materials we've reviewed this quarter. That means we'll be reviewing everything from our wilderness packets.
- HW: Creating an outline for your paper. This topic outline should include: claim and reasons written out, evidence from six sources (two different sources per paragraph, at least three paragraphs, thus the six sources).
FRIDAY
- Overview of introductions and conclusions. Most of the class, you will work on finishing your draft of the wilderness essay. Our goal is to have you leave for break with a draft completed.
- HW: Spring Break. Come back refreshed and ready to read Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison.
