Week 4 Syllabus, 4/11/16

WHAT IS LIFE LIKE FOR A PERSON WHO FEELS DIFFERENT, AN OUTCAST from society? Once expelled from the college, the IM makes his way North. This is his great migration, and when he gets to New York, he will be an outcast not because of his color, but because of his southern mannerisms. He now experiences shame not only because of his race, but because of his upbringing as well. Will he continue to encounter racism in the same way as he did in the South?

MONDAY

  • Wrapping up our the evocation of the founder with a DBQ on Booker T. Washington's 1895 Atlanta Exposition speech. Why is this speech significant in the context of the founding of the college, and the IM's experience there? As to his expulsion, how does his leaving the college embody the spirit of BTW's challenge to black America? The BTW's Atlanta Exposition speech is here. PBS background on the speech is here. And here's a video that won't play in chrome or IE...but try it in safari? Or another browser? Finally, actual audio of BTW reading.
