Syllabus, September 12

WHAT ROLE DOES NATURE PLAY IN YOUR LIFE? WHY does wilderness matter, or does it matter?  Last week we practiced the basics of research: look (factual, objective analysis), think (subjective interpretation of facts), wonder (questions that remain unanswered or deserve exploration), and share (discuss and re-evaluate the prior steps with scholars-peers). We practiced these with two poems and two art works. We also started reading Into the Wild, the story of Chris McCandless' view of nature, and why wilderness mattered to him.

MONDAY

  • Using these four steps to examine Turner's thesis. We will then return to the documentary on American landscape painting, picking up after minute 10 and the Earth First "tree-huggers." We will close today by sharing examples of our annotations of chapter 1, 4, and 8 in small group.
  • Begin answering discussion doc questions as a reader's journal. You should keep these answers in a word document. Tonight, brainstorm answers to chapter 1-4 questions. Also, read chapter 9.

TUESDAY

  • Examining Popeye the Sailor in "I Yam What I Yam": What does this cartoon short reveal about the cartoonist's view of nature and wilderness? Students will examine the cartoon using the aforementioned method.  We will also have small group discussion of chapters 1 through 4.
  • HW: 4th period: Read the first 6 pages of "Death on the Prairie." 9th period: Tonight, finish reading "Death on the Prairie" in preparation for discussion on chapter Wednesday.

WEDNESDAY

  • 4th period: discussing the first 4 chapters of ITW. Time permitting....9th period: Discussing the Laskin reading. We will examine: the question the author seeks to answer in the chapter, the structure the author uses, and the author's credibility/credentials (as best as we can).
  • HW: Read chapter 10 tonight. It's shorter. If you are behind catch up! Tonight you will have questions 5-10 to brainstorm for class discussion.

THURSDAY

  • Discussion day! Today we will be in small groups practicing the great books method of discussion on chapters 4-10.
  • HW: Read chapter 11 for Monday.

FRIDAY

  • Meeting in the library for an orientation. You will have the opportunity to practice your research skills. This will be a timed experience, and your task will NOT be revealed until we are in the library.
  • HW:  Finish reading chapter 11 for Monday. You should also take a photograph that illustrates what nature / wilderness means to you. This should be a picture YOU take. Bring an electronic copy with you to class on Monday.
