Syllabus, September 26

HOW DO YOU ENVISION NATURE?  What role does the natural world play in American life today? We will finish our unit on American nature/wilderness literature and begin writing our first, multi-genre essay using argumentative structure.

MONDAY

  • 6th period will continue with the Muir documentary. I will collect your notes when we are finished with it on Tuesday.
  • Both classes should have read chapter 16 of ITW by class tomorrow. Finish watching the documentary and complete your notes for class.

TUESDAY

  • We will start with Aldo Leopold's essay, "A Good Oak," reading portions aloud. We will then check out some of the photographs saved in the American_lit_nature_images_2016 folder. After collecting the notes on the Muir documentary, we will start an award winning film, Grizzly Man, and while taking notes, think about this question: Does our encounters in nature make us better or worse Americans?
  • HW: Finish reading the essay, "Good Oak."

WEDNESDAY

  • Brief introduction to the unit assessment, a multi-genre argument that addresses your understanding of American nature/wilderness, as portrayed in literature and art. We will begin in earnest "Grizzly Man."
  • HW: No homework. If behind, get caught up in ITW

THURSDAY

  • Part 2 and the end of the documentary.
  • HW: Also read chapter 17 in ITW

FRIDAY

  • Discussion day. What do we learn about nature through the eyes of Muir, McCandless, Leopold, Treadwell? How does that fit with your view of nature?
  • HW:  Finish reading ITW this weekend. I will collect your books and grade annotations on Monday (Tuesday for those missing for religious holiday).
