Syllabus, February 20
WE ARE WRAPPING UP A UNIT ON RACE & IDENTITY, and should begin writing a paper drawing connections between Toni Morrison's Beloved and: a poem, a spiritual song, a short-story, a documentary, and other literary source(s). This will be a multi-genre, argumentative essay that will model your junior theme research paper.
MONDAY
- Today we will start reading a modern American short story by Reginald Knight, "The Kind of Light That Shines in Texas." In this story, we see a black student confronting his image--how his perceived by other students--in comparison to the two other black students in his school.
- HW: Your annotations to Beloved are due tomorrow! Finish your reading, if you have not already done so (most have).
TUESDAY
- Returning to the poetry packet that we began on Thursday of last week. After reviewing the information entered on our most recent google sheet summarizing what other experts have written about your novel's theme, we will discuss, "A Raisin in the Sun" and "Song of the Son" by Langston Hughes and Jean Toomer, respectively.
- HW: I will begin grading the google document tomorrow. So you should revisit that as well as your Beloved annotations.
WEDNESDAY
- Today we will look at "The Harlem Dancer," "The White City," and "The Harlem Esthete." Time permitting, we will return to the Knight short story. Finally, we will begin crafting your claim.
- HW: Now that you have finished some initial research on your novel, and have a sense of what other writers have written about your novel, you will begin writing your theme. Answer the following : What is the ONE theme that you are investigating? What does (my author) say about the theme of ________________ in the novel (title of novel)? Typed. On one sheet of paper. Name, class, and date typed in upper right hand corner. Insert a title, which should be the title and author of your chosen novel.
