Syllabus for week of September 10
Monday
- Begin discussing the questions posted to college essay blog. HW: No homework. Make sure you have finished reading Campbell's introduction to "Departure."
Tuesday
- Finishing our discussion on your college essay questions.
- HW: Read the introduction to Campbell's chapter on "Initiation" for class tomorrow.
Wednesday
- Reviewing a sample college essay and lecture on using detail and "saying more about less" in your essay.
- HW: Now that you actually have the selection from Campbell, read the "Initiation" handout.
Thursday
- Looking at contemporary examples of the hero journey in American film: crossing the threshold in Finding Nemo, rebirth in The Matrix, refusal of the call from Spiderman, and other examples.
- HW: Select a favorite film and, using the following web page, build a hero journey study guide, providing examples from the film that fit (as best able) this version of the journey: click here
Friday
- Meeting in computer lab 224 to work on college essay rough drafts.
- Bring materials to work on the essay. During class, we will make an appointment schedule for college essay conferences that will take place next week. You will need to have a rough draft with you for that meeting.
- HW: Next week we will start reading The Ramayana. Finish a solid working draft of your college essay this weekend.
