Syllabus for week of October 13

LAST WEEK we began in earnest our reading of R.K. Narayan's modern prose rendition of Kamban's version of The Ramayana. Also, I finished meeting with all students a second time, providing specific feedback on revision for the college essay. Revised drafts are due no later than a week from Monday.

Monday

  • No school for Columbus Day.
  • HW: You should have finished reading chapter three for class tomorrow. 

Tuesday

  • Discussion of chapter three. What is the role of promises in the world of Valmiki? What is the nature of promises, and how do they factor in our lives? In class writing, personal response narrative to chapter three, followed up with a blog post. 
  • HW: Tonight and tomorrow, read the following children story, How Ganesha Got His Elephant Head.

Wednesday

  • No school for PSAT testing.
  • HW: Review the following Hinduism terms in preparation for Thursday's discussion.

Thursday

  • What role does dharma play in The Ramayana? Do you see any of these Hindu laws playing out in your life/experience? As with Tuesday, we will write a personal narrative response to that, and then follow it up with a blog-posting on the definition.
  • HW: Read chapter four, 'Encounters in Exile."

Friday

  • Discussion of the wilderness. How is it distinct from the civilized world that is described?
  • HW: Reading chapter five, "The Grand Tormentor."
