Syllabus for week of October 6

LAST WEEK I continued to meet individually with students to discuss college essays. That will continue this week and next. We also began our unit on Hinduism and a close reading of R.K. Narayan's modern prose rendition of Kamban's version of The Ramayana.

Monday

  • Short quiz on "Prologue." Small group discussion of the story, using the questions provided. As with last week, during your discussion I will meet individually with students to review first drafts of college essays. 
  • HW: Begin reading part two, "The Wedding," pages 22-middle of 28.

Tuesday

  • Quiz on chapter one. Short lecture on part one of Ramayana.  Small group work on guided questions, and ending with a brief discussion: What is the importance of weddings?
  • HW: Reading the last part of chapter two, up through and including page 32.

Wednesday

  • Quiz on chapter two. In class reading of chapter three, "Two Promises Revived."
  • HW: Read the next eight pages of chapter three, starting from where we left off in class. 

Thursday

  • Continuing with chapter three in class today. What is a promise worth? Reading "The Frog Prince" today in class. 
  • HW: Finish chapter three for class on Tuesday, up through page 61.

Friday

  • No school today or Monday.
  • HW: Make sure you have read all of chapter three for Tuesday.
