Syllabus for Week of February 10
Monday
- Reading the section of Jung entitled "Rites of Passage" and "The Dynamics of Progress" in our text, and then discussing whether or not we agree with Jung's description of how each gender experiences passage/progress. We will then watch about ten minutes from Today's Special, as our main character confronts his own rites of passage and personal progress.
- HW: Prepare for a conversation about the last three chapters of Like Water for Chocolate.
Tuesday
- Reading "Love and Marriage," from Jung together. Discussion of the end of Like Water for Chocolate. If Tita and Pedro's union is transitory and fleeting, then is it--ultimately--important? What is lasting? How is this aspect of Tita's life important?
- HW: Completing the Jungian and mythological analysis of the novel. Note packets are due Wednesday.
Wednesday
- We will finish watching the film Today's Special, and will discuss how he film fits into Jung and Campbell's understandings.
- HW: Read the last part of chapter three in Jung: A Very Short Introduction, the sections on "The Stroke of Noon" and "The Individuation of the Self," pages 80-84.
Thursday
- Today we will meet in computer lab 224 to write a comparative analysis of Today's Special and Like Water for Chocolate.
- HW: What does Joseph Campbell have to say on the topic of women and love? Watch the following video tonight: Love and the Goddess.
Friday
- Continuing to work in lab 224 on the aforementioned essay.
- HW: Essay is due Wednesday, as we do not have class on Monday or Tuesday. The next text we are reading is Life of Pi. Please bring this novel with you to class on Wednesday.
