Syllabus for April 7

Monday

  • Reading chapter five, "Dreams," of Jung: A Very Short Introduction. How is Jung's view of dream interpretation different from that of Freud? Reading pages 102-119.
  • HW: Tonight will be a catch up night for most in the class, reading up through page 58, "The 18th Night" in Arabian Nights.

Tuesday

  • Today we work in small groups completing an overview analysis of "The Story of the Fisherman and the Demon" in class. What is the a) exposition, b) the development of plot, c) the peripeteia, and d) the lysis of this story? 
  • HW: Finish reading this tale and take notes on the aforementioned story, up through and including page 80 in the Haddaway. 

Wednesday

  • Discussion: what is the Jungian interpretation of the fisherman tale? Reading: "The Story of the Porter and the Three Ladies" We will keep notes on this tale, just as we did with the fisherman and demon tale. 
  • HW: Read up to page 104, "The First Dervish's Tale."

Thursday

  • Watching an A&E documentary on the history of the Arabian Nights.
  • HW: Read up through page 111, "The Second Dervish's Tale."

Friday

  • We will finish the documentary, and then begin reading the second dervish tale. 
  • HW: Reading up through page 138, the start of the third dervish's tale.
