Syllabus for week of September 22

LAST WEEK we finished reading the first chapter of The Hero with 1,000 Faces. It detailed departure within the monomyth. We also discussed how Santiago experienced departure, and watched the first part of Star Wars, Luke Skywalker's call to adventure, refusal of the call, encounter with guardians, experience with the supernatural, and entrance into the belly of the whale. 

Monday

  • No class due to late start.
  • HW: Read part one of chapter three, "The Refusal of the Return" and "The Magic Flight" for class on Wednesday (no class on Monday).

Tuesday

  • Today we will see the loss of the Mentor, the escape from the Whale's Belly, and the hero's acceptance of the Supernatural "force," all key moments to Luke Skywalker's hero journey. We will also finish going through the posted essay questions. 
  • HW: Writing first draft of college essay. You will need to have a draft completed by class on Monday. 

Wednesday

  • Today we will finish watching the film Star Wars. We also will discuss briefly the return stage of the monomyth (refusal of the return, and flight).
  • HW: 

Thursday

  • No school for Rosh Hashanah
  • HW: Writing draft of college essay, due Monday. 

Friday

  • We will return to our discussion of Campbell's monomyth and Star Wars. Why is the ending anti-climactic? We will also begin reading the short story, "By the Waters of Babylon."
  • HW: Finish watching the George Lucas and Bill Moyer's interview on mythology of Star Wars. Here's a link to the video. Finish reading the short story. Have a draft of your college essay for Monday.
