Week 4 Syllabus, 9/14/2015

COLLEGE ESSAYS should reflect what you want to say to the admissions counselors (outside of what the application already says), should reflect your ability to write, and should demonstrate how you think, what you are capable of. It should be in your voice, be from your perspective (a high-school senior), and more than anything else should answer the question asked.

Monday

  • Prewriting for college essay: what is your bliss? Today we will get to the Introduction to Hinduism, and starting the introduction to The Ramayana. 
  • HW: To clarify your homework to date. You should have finished your revisions of the Alchemist essay and posted your revisions to our squarespace page. Likewise, I have collected the 5 answers to the Alchemist questions, the 5 college essay brainstorming activities, and the hero journey notes on the Alchemist. Previously, I had graded and returned a short bibliography on the monomyth. Finish reading the Hinduism packet tonight. A rough draft of the college essay is due a week from today (9/21).

Tuesday

  • Continuing with the introduction of the Ramayana today. Also, crossword on terms related to Hinduism. 
  • HW:  Reading the introduction to the Ramayana, pages vii (7) through xxviii (28).

Wednesday

  •  Looking at both the cosmogany and the theogany of the Ramayana.
  • HW:  Reading the prologue of the Ramayana, pages 3 through 6.

Thursday

  • Today we will start a documentary on Hinduism. During it, students should take notes on the questions provided. 
  • HW: Reading part one of "Rama's Initiation" in the Ramayana, pages 7 through 11.

Friday

  • Part two of the documentary. 
  • HW:  First draft of the college essay due Monday. Finish reading part one of the Ramayana, pages 12 through 21.
