Week 5 Syllabus, 9/21/2015
HAVING FINISHED THE ALCHEMIST ESSAYS, we have moved on to The Ramayana. You will want to practice your pronunciations this week, using the interactive guide posted on our blog.
Monday
Short quiz on "Prologue." Small group discussion on the cosmogany/theogany reflected in Kosala, the rule of Dasaratha, and the heroism of Rama. I will also begin meeting with students, conferencing during class. Some questions we will look at.
HW: Read the first part of chapter two, "The Wedding," pages 22-to-the-middle of 28.
Tuesday
- Quiz on chapter one. Discussion of the chapter: What is the importance of weddings? What do we think of Rama and Sita's meeting (and forthcoming joining)? What significance does this meeting have on a universal scale? I will continue conferencing. Please make sure you have a hard copy of your college essay with you, in class.
- HW: Reading the last part of chapter two, up through and including page 32.
Wednesday
- Quiz on chapter two. In class reading of chapter three, "Two Promises Revived."I will continue conferencing. Please make sure you have a hard copy of your college essay with you, in class.
- HW: Read the next eight pages of chapter three, starting from where we left off in class.
Thursday
- Continuing with chapter three in class today. What is a promise worth? Reading "The Frog Prince" today in class. I will continue conferencing. Please make sure you have a hard copy of your college essay with you, in class.
- HW: Reading the next eight pages of chapter three.
Friday
- Discussion of chapter three. What is the role of promises? What role do such bonds play, and why are they important? What role do we see such bonds play in contemporary American society? I hope to have all conferences finished by today.
- HW: Revising your college essay. Revision due on Monday.
