Semester 2, Weeks 1 and 2
LAST WEEK WE REVISITED some stylistic problems that were revealed by the final essay. Besides posting and revising the connection between Doris Lessing's "Through the Tunnel" and Neo's call to adventure in "The Matrix," we also revisited chapter four of Jung: A Very Short Introduction. We return to Homer's Iliad this week.
Monday
We will start with the end of chapter four, looking at Jung's four functions (thinking, sensation, intuition, and feeling) and the two types (introverted and extraverted). We will use Rankin & Bass' heat and snow-meisers as a metaphor for these psychological types, recognizing that no one person is an absolute of any function/type. Also, we will have reviewed punctuation rules for the noble dash.
HW: Finish reading book 11 in Homer's Iliad.
Tuesday
Reading of book 16.
HW: Finish the last few pages of book 16, and read the first half of book 18.
Wednesday
- Today we will begin watching a documentary on Zeus and his role in Hesiod's Theogany. It is the tale of the Ancient Greek structuring of the created cosmos. Many decent overviews of the Theogony aboud; here's a fairly decent one.
- HW: Read the second half of book 18 tonight.
Thursday
- We will finish the documentary, and then discuss the gods role in books 16. Answer the following questions: How do the gods intervene in Sarpedon’s life and corpse? What does Zeus’ and the other gods intervention mean for the two armies? How doe the gods intervene in Patroclus’s life and corpse? What role does Glaucus play in the battle over Patroclus’s body?
- HW: Finish answering these questions for class tomorrow. Read the first half of book 20 tonight.
Friday
- Discussion of books 16 and 18Introduction to the Ancient Greek research project. Time permitting, we will also listen to part of book 20.
- HW: Finish reading both books 21 and 22.
