November 7, Syllabus
WHAT IS THE LEAST OBVIOUS, MOST IMPORTANT MYTHOLOGICAL LESSON in The Ramayana? This week you will begin writing an essay that captures your thinking about the epic, Indian poem and its connection to your life. Sita Sings the Blues is a nice example of one artist's exploration of the myth and what it means to her. Your analysis should likewise critique the myth in and of itself, but also place it your life experience and world.
MONDAY
- Introducing the essay assignment. We will also show a brief anime version of the myth; it's located on the shared read drive, in the English>Easton>Myth&Mind>Ramayana folder.
- HW: Begin brainstorming for your essay.
TUESDAY
- What does The Ramayana say about warfare? After returning the books, we will go through the text looking for references like the one we watched in the anime version that we might have missed. While a tale of romance, it is also a story of global war. What does is say on this topic?
