Week 6 Syllabus, 2/8/16

THE CLASS WILL READ SELECTIONS ON ANCIENT Greek gods and heroes this and next week. I will distribute these readings via email, and you should print them out and write key questions for each reading. These should include a question on Jungian psychology, and a question on Campbell's monomyth. For example, for Heracles we might ask, "How does Heracles represent opposites in Greek society, for example, the animalistic and violent chaos of nature, as well as the controlled order of civilization?" And for the monomyth, "Why is what might otherwise seem the depth of despair, Heracles' killing of his wife and children, actually just the beginning of a journey of transformation?" For each reading, I want you to write at least ONE question, per hero/god, from both Jung and Campbell's perspectives.

MONDAY

  • We will start today by stepping back to review the Greek research assignment, including a) the annotated bibliography; b) the three art works; c) the reading selection. I will lecture on all three parts, on what constitutes an "A" on each part of the project. Afterwards, we will ajourn to lab 377N to work on compiling these parts (if not complete), but then to start writing a report on your hero/god, and what Campbell and Jung would say about your assigned hero.
  • HW: The written part of your paper is due one week from today. Remember, you should have five sources in your works cited page, using these quotes to present what experts say about your hero/god. Reading selections 1, 2 and 3 in our packet.

TUESDAY

  • Starting our discussions of the three heroes/gods. The three students will lead the discussion from the front of class. Together they will ask the class about what what the most interesting, unexpected, and striking similarity between this and their heroes. The trio will also lead a discussion on what Campbell and Jung would say about these heroes.
