Week 5 Syllabus, 4/18
SINDBAD THE SAILOR TEACHES SINDBAD THE PORTER some essential tenants of Islam: piety before an all-mighty God, the one supreme God; kindness to strangers and travelers, providing alms, food and shelter to the needy or poor; humility and thankfulness for God's blessings. Perhaps most importantly, Sindbad is an exemplar, teaching all humanity of God's greatness and the right path to a life lived well and lived correctly.
MONDAY
- Introduction to Arabian (1001) Nights.
- HW: Begin reading the handout, the Haddaway introduction from 1001 Nights: Part 1.
TUESDAY
- Continuing with the background on 1001 Nights, and watching another short segment of Today's Special.
- HW: Reading the introduction to Sindbad the Sailor and Other Arabian Nights Tales.
WEDNESDAY
- Watching the film and an introduction to the writing assignment on the film.
- HW: Read journey one and two from Arabian Nights.
THURSDAY
- Finishing the last five minutes of Today's Special, and writing a paragraph, to be posted as a blog comment by end of day. How does Samir represent Jung's individuation process? I will also distribute an outline of journey one and two.
- HW: Reading pages 20 through 39 of Arabian Nights, Sindbad's journey 3 and 4. Keep notes on important, potentially symbolic events.
FRIDAY
- Inside the belly of the whale. How is the 5th journey's cave a symbol of Sindbad's rebirth? How does he confront his former self, and strike a new balance between greed (his merchant self) and piety (his Muslim self)?
- HW: Finish the Sindbad tales for Monday. We will have an in-class essay on Monday.
