Syllabus for 10/1 through 10/5
WE WILL FINISH THE ALCHEMIST this week, and will likewise finish first-draft conferences of the college essay. The paper students write on this text will require they identify ONE aphorism from the novel, explain what it means in context of the novel and Campbell’s hero journey, and write about what it means in the context in your life. The next text we will read is a modern verse translation of the Indian epic poem The Ramayana. Our translator is R.K. Narayan.
MONDAY
Today we will pick up on page 132 and listen to Jeremy Irons reading the ending of The Alchemist.
HW: Begin reading through your annotations in the text, scanning for the aphorism tha tyou would like to use for your paper. Remember, you will need to explain what
TUESDAY
Returing to Campbell “initiation” packet, finishing “Atonement with the Father.”
HW: Tonight, students should read the essay, “The Myth of Joseph Campbell.” What argument is the writer making about Campbell’s scholarship?
WEDNESDAY
Listening to the end of The Alchemist.
HW: Select your aphorism and begin drafting an outline for your paper on The Alchemist.
THURSDAY
Meeting in lab W-231 to work on writing the first draft of aphorism essay.
HW: Finish revising your college essay. Write a first draft of your aphorism essay.
FRIDAY
No class for Columbus Day weekend.
HW: Obtain your copy of The Ramayana. It is VERY important that you obtain a copy that is the modern verse translation by Narayan.
