Syllabus for 12/2 though 12/6

CAN THE STRUGGLE TO BECOME A PERSON be a hero journey in and of itself? How can Tita, a young Mexican woman who never leaves home, be a hero on her own hero-journey? We will examine the novel Like Water for Chocolate through a Jungian lens, beginning to learn the basics of Jungian psychology while reading the novel. Buckle up! This journey is going to be an interesting one.

MONDAY

  • Finishing our examination of Alchemist essays. We will also finish watching “Sita Sings the Blues”

  • HW: Work on revising your essay on the Alchemist.

TUESDAY

  • Introduction to Carl Jung. Short lecture, then pair and share reading aloud from the Dr. Boeree handout.

  • HW: Read chapter two in LWFC tonight, and answer study guide questions on chapter one and two.

WEDNESDAY

  • Examining a documentary on Sigmund Freud: Biography.

  • HW: Read chapter three and answer the study guide questions on the chapter.

THURSDAY

  • Discussion: how is Tita conflicted? How is she a hero at battle, even though she never leaves her home? Is Tita’s situation similar to that of Sita?

  • HW: Reading chapter 4, answering study guide questions tonight.

FRIDAY

  • Watching a documentary, The Wisdom of the Dream, on the life of Carl Jung. You should take notes on this video. Notes will be due on Monday.

  • HW: Finish the documentary notes for class on Monday. You should also have revised your Alchemist essay by Monday as well.
