HOW DOES JUNGIAN THEORY INTERSECT with Tita from Like Water for Chocolate? Who is Tita, and what is at root of the conflicts she experiences? What within her relationship with Mama Elena is problematic? Further, why is Mama Elana so controlling of her youngest daughter, as well as the entire ranch and the people who subsist on it? What within Tita’s love for Roberto is injurious? Further, how is love—eros and philia—problematic for all members of her family? We will begin in earnest to explore Tita as “a person” and her
MONDAY
We will look at the film version of LWFC, up through the illness brought upon by Tita’s tears in the wedding cake batter. Subsequently, we’ll have a Q&A on Jungian psychology.
HW: No homework. Get caught up on the reading in the novel, as needed.
TUESDAY
Reading the second of introductions to Jungian psychology, this one the first chapter from Robin Robertson’s Beginning’s Guide to Jungian Psychology. After popcorn-ing the essay and discussing, we’ll return to part two of the Jung documentary.
HW: Read chapter five in LWFC tonight, and answer study guide questions.
WEDNESDAY
Today’s Jungian fodder includes chapter four, “Realm of the Complexes” from Eugene Pascal’s Jung to Live By, a quai-self-help text and guide to discovering your inner psychological functions. However, Pascal does provide a nice explanation of personal/collective consciousness, and how complexes function within that paradigm. .
HW: Read chapter six and answer the study guide questions on the chapter.
THURSDAY
More documentary, part two of Jungian background. Again, keeping notes. These will be graded.
HW: Reading chapter seven, answering study guide questions tonight.
