January 17, Syllabus Starting 2nd Semester
THIS WEEK WE WILL FINALIZE FIRST semester grades and begin to look at Carl Jung. For some reason, the book store returned the copies of Jung: A Very Short Introduction by Stevens. So you should purchase your copy on your own. I would recommend the cheapest copy possible, and for this book only, an e-book will be fine. You can find a kindle edition of it here. We will also finish Homer's Iliad, looking at Achilles and comparing him to Heracles.
MONDAY
- No school for grading day.
- HW: No homework.
TUESDAY
- Reviewing the results of the final essay. Discussing "Through the Tunnel" and students' approach to that essay.
- HW: No homework. Second semester starts tomorrow.
WEDNESDAY
- Reviewing the results of the essay relating to Euripides' play, Alcestis. We will break into small groups based upon character, write and post a written paragraph going into greater depth (and a more narrow focus) relative to the hero-journey).
- HW: Again, no homework. However, you should purchase a copy of Steven's book, Jung: A Very Short Introduction.
THURSDAY
- Watching a documentary by the Great Courses: "Heracles: The Greatest Heroes of All." We will look at Heracles through a psychological lens. What type of person is he? What types of conflicts does he experience in his life, and how are these resolved (or not)?
- HW: If not complete in class, you should finish watching and taking notes on the lecture. I will collect these on Friday.
FRIDAY
- Beginning to look at the Stevens text, and we will start the Dr. Borhee handout.
- HW: Read chapter one of the Stevens book, pages 1-20. This is all bibliography, background material. Today will be 1/2 lecture, 1/2 re-reading. If you need that first chapter of the Stevens, click here for a pdf copy.
