March 13, Syllabus
OUR READING OF 1001 NIGHTS will focus on combining the psychological and the mythological. What, for example, is Sindbad espousing as his life's lesson? Why does he continually depart to unknown lands, driven as a merchant to increase wealth--and at what risk? These are the types of questions you will annotate for as you read Haddaway's excellent translation of the Arabian Nights.
MONDAY
- We will begin watching a film which you will analyze and compare to LWFC: Today's Special.
- HW: Come to class with 2-3 pages written on LWFC. This will be a core part of a comparative essay between the novel and the film we're just starting. Due Wednesday.
TUESDAY
- Finishing Today's Special. What connections do you see between Tita and Samir?
- HW: What is the root connection between Samir and Tita's discovery of self (in relationship to love, family, cooking)? What does Tita discover about herself? What does Samir discover about himself? How does that process of discovery occur? Continue sketching out your ideas.
WEDNESDAY
- Today we will finish the film and then spend time writing, in class.
- HW: Essay will be due Monday. This week we will start reading Haddaway's Sindbad.
THURSDAY
- Reading together the introduction to Haddaway's The Arabian Nights.
- HW: Read the introduction in Sindbad for class on Monday.
