Syllabus for 9/11-15

LAST WEEK: We began by reading a short narrative cartoon entitled "The Day I Disappeared." We began discussing that work, and also began to read through the course expectations. You should have your copy of Damascus Nights with you in class this week.

Monday

  • Reviewing, in class, the course expectations. I will collect these for grading purposes, and then return them for your notebook records. I'll also take gradebook snapshots. From there, we will begin discussing the historical background to the summer reading, Damascus Nights.
  • HW: You will want to obtain the copy of our first text, The Alchemist by Paul Cohelo. It's a very popular book, and you can pick up used copies either from Market-Fresh Books in Evanston, or even online resale shops like Alibris.com. Most editions have similar page numbering. Have this book for class next week.

Tuesday

  • Today we will continue exploring some of the historical background on DM, as well as the current political climate / war in Syria today.
  • Hw: Spend 30 minutes reviewing the online materials from our class blog. You can view that here.

Wednesday

  • In class writing assignment on the summer reading. We will meet in lab 377-N. Make sure you have your books with you today. Title your short-essay, "Damascus Nights Evaluation," and in the top right corner include: your id number, Easton-Myth and Mind, and 9-13-2017.
  • HW:

Thursday

  • Hero-journey lecture. We will assign chapters of the summer novel for analysis, and begin that work in class.
  • HW: Complete your preliminary notes on your assigned chapter of Damascus Nights.

Friday

  • The man behind the legend. Today we will watch a 40 minute interview between Bill Moyers and Joseph Campbell, wherein Campbell begins to describe his view of mythology.
  • HW: You should obtain your copy of Cohelo's The Alchemist this weekend...we will start reading it next week. You should review the blue handout, the overview of Campbell's hero journey. And if needed, re-watch the first 25 minutes of the Campbell-Moyers interview from our blog.
