Syllabus for End of 1st Semester

We have spend the last week finishing revisions to the comparative paper between Sita Sings the Blues and The Ramayana, and discussing the end of Like Water for Chocolate. This week, we will begin a film that will allow us to write a comparative paper that examines Like Water for Chocolate.

The film Today's Special, like our novel, explores a destined love. Samir is a sous chef in Manhattan who seeks his place in the world. Like Tita, Samir's family has expectations for his emotional future. Does true love exist? Are we fated to a pre-determined path? We will use this film as a tool to revisit Campbell's monomyth and to prepare for the final.
