Syllabus for 12/3 through 12/7
WHICH LESSONS CAN WE TAKE from The Ramayana? Which lessons do we connect with Indian society and Hindu culture? Which lessons are more universal, and apply to contemporary life? We are introducing Jungian psychology and will also start the next novel we’re reading, Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel. You can find the audio for this novel here.
MONDAY
Completing a “Hero Myth Index” from the text Awakening the Hero Within, a new-agey exploration of Jungian archetypes.
HW: Complete and color your HMI pie chart. Obtain a copy of LWFC
TUESDAY
Short NPR news story on the use of personality tests in America, then a short introduction to Freudian and Jungian psychology. We will start reading the Boeree essay introducing Carl Jung.
HW: Begin roughing out your essay proposal for the Ramayana essay. What is the MOST important, least obvious lesson in the myth? And how do you connect that that mythic lesson in your own life? Begin by defining the mythic lesson. Have that sketched out in pre-writing for class tomorrow.
WEDNESDAY
In small groups, sharing essay ideas for The Ramayana papers. We will then turn to our next text, Like Water for Chocolate, reading chapter one together in class.
HW: Revise your claim on The Ramayana, and begin pre-writing your personal connection to the mythic lesson. Where does the myth and your life intersect?
THURSDAY
As with yesterday, we will share in the same small groups your personal connections to the myth. We will then read chapter two to LWFC together.
HW: Writing your Ramayana paper.
FRIDAY
In lab 377N for writing.
HW: First draft of Ramayana essay is due this MONDAY.
