Syllabus for 1/6 through 1/10

WE WILL BEGIN APPLYING JUNGIAN PSYCHOLOGY to your personal life via a self-help text, Awakening the Hero Within, by Carol Pearson. 'The “hero myth index” is a form of the Myers-Briggs personality assessment, which in turn is based upon Jungian personality types and archytypes. This week we will read her chapter on the lover archtype, applying it to Tita in LWFC. How does Tita fit into what Pearson describes in her Jungian analysis? We will also workshop, in small circles, your essays from The Ramayana.

MONDAY

  • Introduction to the archetype assessment in Pearson. We will take that in class, and score ourselves, seeing which archetype is dominant for each person.

  • HW: Finish scoring your survey. Read pages 148-154 in “Lover” by Pearson. While reading, take notes: How does this information apply to Tita in LWFC? Bring a hard copy of your Ramayana essay to class tomorrow for workshops.

TUESDAY

  • We will then have a workshop day, in class, for the essay which describes the most important, least obvious lesson in The Ramayana. Small groups of five. Plan on finishing at LEAST two essays today. Scholars should read his/her own essay aloud, and keep their own revision notes. When possible, students should share viewing access to their essay via google docs (using NTHS email addresses only.)

  • HW: Read pages 155-159 in yesterday’s handout. Listen to the shorter NPR story that appears above.

WEDNESDAY

  • Discussion of archetype surveys. We will also finish reading the chapter on “The Lover” in class, and then talk about how it fits with Tita in Like Water for Chocolate

  • HW: Which archetype is your dominant trait? Begin reading about yourself here.

THURSDAY

  • Writing day. This will be our second workshop day for the Ramayana essay.

  • HW: We will also read Pearson’s chapter on “the warrior” archetype. Is Tita a warrior? A lover? Both? Read pages 94-103.

FRIDAY

  • Examining the warrior chapter. Where doe we see connections to Rama? Where do we see connections to Tita? Discussion of LWFC.

  • HW: Finish reading “The Warrior” chapter from Pearson. Revisions of LWFC essays on Tuesday.
