Syllabus for 4/29 through 5/3

WHAT DO OUR DREAMS MEAN? According to Jung, how to they reflect the personal, cultural, and archetypal contexts, and the interplay between the conscious and the subconscious? This week we will begin working with two concepts from Jungian psychology: the dream, and the shadow.

MONDAY

  • Introduction to both 1001 (Arabian) Nights, as well as Jung’s concept of dreams. I will hand out three sources relating to the former, and we will begin reading chapter 5 from Jung: A Very Short Introduction.

  • Finish reading the handout that is an overview of Arabian Nights. Read the introduction to the Haddway translation of Arabian Nights. Remember to annotate answers to the questions that are typed in the margins.

TUESDAY

  • Starting class today with a reading of cartoon dreams, located here. We will discuss dreams and the keeping of a dream journal. We will then return to chapter 5.

  • Complete the annotations on the Haddawy introduction.

WEDNESDAY

  • In class essay on Life of Pi.

  • Read page 3-20 in Sindbad, the first three voyages of Sindbad.

THURSDAY

  • What do these voyages mean in the context of Campbell’s hero journey? What do these voyages mean in the context of Jungian psychology? We will conduct some analysis and then discuss as a large group.

  • HW: Reading pages 20-39 tonight, the forth and fifth voyage of Sindbad.

FRIDAY

  • How is the forth journey fundamental to understanding what Sindbad’s journeys are all about? We will watch an Americanized version of the Sindbad story in Popeye vs. Sindbad the Sailor.

  • HW: Finish reading the Sindbad tale for Monday. We will then start on ‘Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves.
