Syllabus for 2/19-23
HOW DOES THE HERO JOURNEY connect to Homer's Iliad? Perhaps obviously, each warrior and god(ess) is on his/her own journey. What sense do you make of the hero journeys within the epic poem? For example, what is Agamemnon's experience? Or Athena's experience? Hector? Achilles? Or even Zeus's hero journey? We will explore these connections in greater depth this week.
MONDAY
- No school for Institute Day.
- Finishing books eight and nine.
TUESDAY
- Finishing the documentary on archaeological Troy. We will then begin reading book twelve in class.
- Please make sure you are reading the summaries of books in the handouts from the start of our unit on Greek mythology. This is especially important as we skip books, as you are doing tonight with books ten and eleven. Read and annotate book twelve.
WEDNESDAY
- Returning to the paragraphs on our blog. What are the writing issues we see in our Diomedes paragraphs? What is Diomedes hero journey, so far, as described by Homer?
- Read book thirteen.
THURSDAY
- Hero journey in Homer's Iliad. What do we make of these heroes? How are they unrealistically idyllic? How are they disappointingly flawed?
- Read book sixteen. Make sure to bring the Stevens text with you to class today.
FRIDAY
- Returning to Jungian psychology. How does Jung's description of "individuation" apply to Achilles?
- No homework for this weekend. Enjoy Winter Carnival, and if you are behind in your reading of Homer's Iliad, catch up.
