Syllabus for 4/16-20

HOW IS PI'S STRUGGLE to survive both literal and figurative? How is the lifeboat a metaphor for his survival, both physical and spiritual? When you read, annotate for these layers of meaning. You should be paying attention to passages that connect to what Pi directly and indirectly connects to his search for meaning in a meaningless world.

MONDAY

  • Examining two film clips: the first is from Monty Python's Meaning of Life, two blue collar workers in a restaurant wondering about life's meaning. The second is from the anthropomorphic Madagascar, wherein a lion, zebra, hippo and giraffe become lost at sea, and land on what they think is a deserted isle. From there we will read chapter 48, 49 and 50 together. We will talk briefly about the lifeboat as a metaphor for Pi's experience.
  • Read through and including chapter 53, up to page 156.

TUESDAY

  • Reading through the first half of chapter five of Jung: A Very Short Introduction, "Dreams."
  • Tonight, read chapters 54 through 58, up to page 169.

WEDNESDAY

  • Finishing our reading of the Jung text, on dreams.
  • If Pi's experience at sea is a dream, what does this dream mean? Reading chapters 59 through 61, up to page 186.

THURSDAY

  • Examining another to struggle to survive at sea, the story of the Shackleton expedition in the documentary The Endurance.
  • Read chapters 62 through 69, up to page 200.

FRIDAY

  • Part two of the documentary.
  • Read up to page 256 in Yann Martel's The Life of Pi for class on Monday, through and including chapter 91.
