Syllabus for 9/23 through 9/27
WE NOW EMBARK ON A HERO JOURNEY from Andalusia to Cairo as Santiago the Shepherd seeks his treasure. As you are reading, keep track of aphorisms, short statements that illustrate a larger life lesson. An obvious example would be : “There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: fear of failure.” The test of the oil in the spoon is another fine example. This week we will begin searching for examples of “departure” in film , using screen capture technology to share clips from popular films. And while listening to The Alchemist, I will start writing conferences for the college essay.
MONDAY
What does the call to adventure look like? We will finish reading that portion of Campbell’s Hero with 1,000 Faces, and then look at two samples from film.
HW: Read up through page 30 in The Alchemist.
TUESDAY
Crossing the threshold. We will read through Campbell together, look at an excelling example from Finding Nemo, and then begin listening to Coelho while I meet with students for college essay conferences.
HW: Read the next 15 pages in The Alchemist.
