Syllabus for week of November 17

WE HAVE BEGUN reading Chopin's The Awakening in earnest, and will periodically refer to the supplementary reading materials. Make sure you have either the hard copy distributed in class or access to the electronic version while in class.

Monday

  • We will play catch up on our class activities, talking about the documentary, the background information on the novella, and the crossword from last week.
  • HW: Finish reading the forth document in the supplemental reading materials packet. It is a book review of the novella.

Tuesday

  • Watching a short potion from the documentary on NOLA, finishing the section on Plessey v. Ferguson and the racial make up of the city, and a section on this history of Jazz. We will then listen to chapter two, and the first part of chapter three.
  • HW: Finish reading chapter four, and read chapter five tonight as well.

Wednesday

  • Today we will watch a short section of the documentary on the Board of Liquidation, a group of wealthy, white bankers and lawyers who run NOLA, and eventually morphs into the Citizens Flood Relief Committee and destroys the Poydras Levee, needlessly displacing some 12,000 lower-class citizens of New Orleans. We will also read the background on Friedan's Feminine Mystique, and discuss what is happening with Edna.
  • HW: Reading chapters 4 through 6 tonight.

Thursday

  • Close reading of chapter 7.
  • HW: Review your annotations for chapters 1-7. Check for words circled, comments made, and questions written in the margins. Do complete the self-evaluation .25 sheet on your writing of questions.

Friday

  • ANOTHER vocabulary day. Starting and completing our second crossword on The Awakening.
  • HW: Read chapters 8-10 for class on Monday.
