Syllabus for week of December 1

WE WILL FINISH reading Chopin's The Awakening before break. Also this week, students will make initial selections for their independent reading. For it, you want an American novel of literary merit that a) is sufficiently challenging and b) is of interest to you. That's the entire criteria.

Monday

  • Lecture on selecting a novel to read. Then discussing Madama Ratignolle's admonition of Robert Lebrun, the piano playing of Mademoiselle Reisz, and the spirit of the Gulf that enthralls and nearly kills Edna.
  • HW: Read chapters 11 and 12, and bring in a list of your top five novels.

Tuesday

  • Discussing chapters 11 and 12. How is chapter 11 a test of wills? In chapter 12, what does Mariequita suspect and why? Introduction to the research process: selection from The Craft of Research by Booth, Colomb, and Williams.
  • HW: Reading chapters 13-15. Remember to use the audio! It's there for a reason...

Wednesday

  • Today we will meet in the Library for a book talk by Mr. Garneau, our friendly neighborhood librarian. Now is the time to get to know this man, as he is kind and helpful. My expectation is that you should leave the library today with five additional possible titles.
  • HW: Reading chapters 16 and 17.

Thursday

  • Discussion of chapters 13 through 17.
  • HW: Reading chapters 18 through 20
