Syllabus for March 24

Monday

  • In class review of Invisible Man, chapter fifteen. We will start in a circle and review the pre-reading notes and questions, and then listen along to the recording, during which students should annotate for those same pre-reading notes/questions. Subsequently, we will discuss the following: Why does the IM have second thoughts about leaving Mary's comfort and care? Why doesn't he tell her the truth about where the money comes from? Why does Ellison develop this lie? What is the symbolism of the cockroaches? And the symbolism of the cast-iron bank? What would Ellison say that chapter fifteen means?
  • HW: You should have completely finished reading your novel by class tomorrow. Once done, answer the questions in the far-right column on the google-doc linked to our most recent blog entry (just prior to this one).

Tuesday

  • Third period will meet in lab 377-N to work on writing the first draft of their research paper. Remember, this paper should focus less on a) what happens within the novel, and more on b) what the author wants her audience to realize, having read the novel. In other words, what does the novel mean? What question does the novelist explore through her work? What truth/question does she want her audience to confront/ponder? Get a draft done before leaving for Spring Break.
  • Ninth period will examine parts of two different documentaries related to our reading of Invisible Man. The first is a selection that details the history behind one of the artifacts that was discarded when the Provo family is evicted, an article on Marcus Garvey's deportation. The second is a selection from the Ralph Ellison documentary, and details his life during the 1930s, just prior to starting his novel Invisible Man.
  • HW: The aforementioned paper is your only homework this week, from this point on.

Wednesday

  • Today will be the reverse of yesterday. 3rd period will meet in the classroom to review the aforementioned documentaries, and 9th period will meet in lab 224 to work on their first draft of their research paper.
  • HW: Finishing the paper.

Thursday

  • Today we will focus on chapter sixteen of IM.
  • HW: Printing your paper, and handing it in tomorrow.

Friday

  • Collecting first drafts of research papers. The finishing our discussion of chapter sixteen, and leading into chapter seventeen of IM.
  • HW: Rest for the next nine days.
