Syllabus for Week of May 5

Monday

  • Close analysis of Clifton's funeral. We will revisit our "green sheet" analysis of Clifton's death and Sambo. Rather than researching by looking for an answer, finding an answer, and moving on, you need to think critically about the material you find. Looking at music in chapter 21 as a metaphor for that type of research. What can we find out about "Many Thousand Gone," the song that so inspires both the IM and those at Clifton's funeral?
  • HW: Finish reading chapter 21, the IM's funeral oration. When done, try to discover the meaning behind the line, "...Tod Clifton's Tod (emphasis Ellison's)." What does "Tod" mean?

Tuesday

  • Today in class, we will read chapter 22 together. The glass eye of Brother Jack as a metaphor for sight, invisibility, and blindness.
  • HW: Read the first half of chapter 23, pages 479 through 493.

Wednesday

  • Rhinehart. How does Ellison use sight, identity, and disguise in this chapter? How does the Invisible man learn to hide his real identity in order to function in Harlem? What are the identities that he takes on, and of what are they analogous?
  • HW: Complete the chapter 23 worksheet questions, due in class tomorrow.

Thursday

  • Today will have a short quiz on chapter 23. After, we will begin looking at the Invisible Man's plan to discover the Brotherhood's secret agenda for Harlem (which will fail, by the way), as the rioting in Harlem begins.
  • HW: Finish reading chapter 24 for homework.

Friday

  • Period 3 will not meet today due to the early dismissal. Those students who need to turn in their themes should do so to me in room 330. In the event I am not in the office at the time, kindly leave your paper on my desk chair (not the desk). 9th period will begin reading chapter 25 today, and should have finished that chapter by class on Tuesday. 3rd period will begin reading that same chapter on Monday, and will also be done with that chapter by Tuesday.
  • HW: By class on Tuesday, we will only have the "Epilogue" left to read, which we will look at during class. I will collect your copy of the novel to grade annotation on Friday.
