Week 5 Syllabus, 11/16/15
Monday
- We will finish Friday's exercise about commercials with a 1950s short advertising film, "For the Wife," and will then start watching the film version of The Awakening, entitled Grand Isle. For the advertisement: What about the film is sexist? How would the ad shape the viewer's attitudes, beliefs, and actions? What are the essential truths that the commercial takes for granted? What do we think about the observation that women's 5th freedom is the freedom from "unwanted drugery" and freedom "to shop when we want to"?
- HW: Read the Atlantic 2007 essay, "The Truth About Beauty."
Tuesday
- Today we will read through the poetry selections in our packet. Keeping notes on what you notice in the poems. What are they about? How does the poet evoke that message/experience for the reader?
- HW: Begin gathering information for a comparison/contrast essay on Chopin and Cassatt. Bring colored pencils or crayons for class tomorrow.
Wednesday
- Brainstorming information about both Chopin and Cassatt. What are the most important, least obvious things to know? Creating mind-maps that illustrate your core ideas, and the evidence that supports them.
- HW: Mind-map is due tomorrow in class.
Thursday
- Creating an argument outline for your paper. What are the potential sub-arguments that you can make? Counter arguments or hedges you should make? What do other experts say about your ideas? We will add complexity to the argument you started in class yesterday.
- HW: First draft of paper is due Monday.
Friday
No school for professional development day.
